The Ford Escape is a compact crossover and sport utility vehicle SUV sold by the Ford Motor Company. It was introduced in 2001 priced below the Ford Explorer. The Escape comes in either FWD front wheel drive or 4WD four wheel drive. While the Ford Escape is technically a crossover vehicle, it is marketed by Ford as part of their traditional SUV lineup. The Ford Escape is thought of by many as a drilled down smaller more compact Explorer with similar body style and features. The first generation was jointly developed with Mazda which also created the Mazda Tribute and Mercury Mariner as the twin model. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2022 Ford Escape an overall safety rating of five out of five stars.
