File photo: Guteksk7, Shutter Stock, licensed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON, D.C. &#8211; As more and more Americans pivot away from gas-powered cars and embrace electric vehicles, one group is experiencing more growing pains than most: renters, who often find themselves&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/renters-face-charging-dilemma-u-073325294.html\" target=\"_blank\">without any charging stations readily available<\/a>&nbsp;to them for juicing up their rides overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Renters, especially in cities, are often finding that they don\u2019t have designated places to plug their EVs in overnight, and they often are finding that public charging stations are frequently already in use when they get there, leaving them few \u2013 if any \u2013 options to top off their battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While homeowners with EVs don\u2019t have to worry about this issue \u2013 most have a charging station in their garage \u2013 renters are increasingly growing frustrated with their inability to conveniently plug in and recharge their cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Americans who live in apartments without private garages are stringing extension cords across sidewalks and waiting in line at public charging stations for hours to power up their electric vehicles. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/N0S5qFqxTk\">https:\/\/t.co\/N0S5qFqxTk<\/a><\/p>&mdash; ABC News (@ABC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ABC\/status\/1584997266804408330?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 25, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While many cities are attempting to increase the number of public charging stations within their limits to address the issue, in the here-and-now some people are going to extraordinary means to get a charge, including running power cords out of their windows into the street, or waiting in long lines to access public chargers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September, the Biden Administration allocated $5 billion to construct a series of high-speed chargers along interstate highways over the course of the next five years; in addition, states can apply for a grant from an additional pool of $2.5 billion to construct their own public chargers, particularly in highly-populated urban regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the future is looking brighter for renters that own electric cars, Jeff Allen \u2013 Executive Director of equitable EV charging advocate Forth \u2013 said that the here-and-now is proving to be very difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>We have a really large challenge right now with making it easy for people to charge who live in apartments,\u201d he said. \u201cCities have to understand that promoting electric cars is also part of their sustainable transportation strategy.
