When designed Outlander was based on the Mitsubishi ASX as an Active Sports Crossover representing Mitsubishi as they entered the SUV trend while retaining the off-road abilities of a truck with car like levels of emissions, economy and size. The Outlander earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus Award after acing all its crash tests. The regular Outlander is larger than the Outlander Sport offering more seating and a larger standard engine than the new Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. Competing in its class is the CR-V, Forester, Tiguan Rogue and RAV4, all of which are also considered compact to midsize crossover SUVs.
