Toyota Camry has been manufactured by Toyota for over 40 years since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size, later Camry models have grown to fit the mid-size classification. When Toyota released their luxury Lexus brand in 1989, it offered a close derivative of the Camry sedan as the Lexus ES. The relationship continues to this day. Competing with mainstream and more affordable models Camry is seen as a luxury car. In the United States, except for 2001, the Camry has been the best selling passenger vehicle since 1997 and remains at the top of the list. It competes with the Civic, the Corolla, the Accord, and the Altima, all of which are also best-selling passenger cars. Camry is fifth in the list of the worlds best selling vehicles.
