WASHINGTON D.C. – Automakers Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis have been forced to issue a massive recall for a wide variety of over 147,000 of their electric vehicles (EVs) due to issues that could result in potential power loss to their wheels, according to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The recall stems from the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) installed in the 147,110 potentially affected vehicles; the charging units in the EVs in question are potentially defective and have the possibility of failing; consequently, they would cease to charge the vehicle’s 12-volt battery, which could result in a hazardous loss of wheel power.
Of the three automakers, Hyundai has the most models affected by the issue, with the company issuing a recall for 98,878 of their EVs. The vehicles affected by the charging unit defect include the Hyundai Ioniq 5 from the 2022 through 2024 model years and the Ioniq 6 from the 2023 and 2024 model years.
In addition, Hyundai is also recalling models from their Genesis luxury brand, which are also potentially affected by the charging problem; these include the Genesis GV60, Electrified GV70, and Electrified G80 from the 2023 and 2024 model years.
As for Kia, the auto manufacturer announced that they have issued a recall for 48,232 of its electric EV6 SUVs from the 2022, 2023, and 2024 model years.
Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis have requested that owners of the recalled models bring them to their respective local official dealerships, where technicians will inspect and – if need be, free of charge – replace the defective ICCU and its fuse, as well as install a software update for the ICCU.
Owners of the recalled Hyundai and Genesis EVs will receive notifications via a mailed letter on May 14, whereas Kia owners will be informed on April 29.
