DETROIT, MI — The third-generation Ford GT supercar – which retails for a whopping $500,000 – will be finally ending its production run, but the pricy luxury sports vehicle will certainly be going out with a bang in the form of a final special edition model that reflects upon its long racing history.
The Ford GT is a mid-engine two-seater sports car originally manufactured and marketed between 2004 and 2006; the vehicle was brought back to Ford’s lineup in 2016, and has been made available ever since.
In an announcement on Wednesday by Mark Rushbrook, Global Director of Ford Performance Motorsports, it was noted that the 2022 Ford GT LM Edition will be the last version of the vehicle, with only 20 slated to be produced.
As we close this chapter of the road-going Ford GT, the GT LM Edition gave us a chance to inject even more heart and soul from a podium-finishing racecar, furthering the tribute to our 2016 Le Mans win,” he said.
The upcoming GT LM Edition harkens back to the memories of the supercar’s victory at the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans – an endurance-focused race held annually near the town of Le Mans, France – as well as the vehicle’s defeat of competitor Ferrari back at the 1966 Le Mans.
The current third-generation GTs feature a twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine with 660-horsepower and 216 mph top speed, and were built by Multimatic Inc. located in Ontario, Canada.
Ford has not yet stated if there are any plans in the works to introduce a fourth-generation GT at some point in time, nor have they yet confirmed the price of the upcoming GT LM Edition, although it is expected to fall within the model’s typical $500,000 range.
