MIAMI, FL – A title clerk at a Miami auto tag agency has been arrested for her involvement in a multi-million dollar title fraud scheme. Katherine M. Vera Moran, 27, was apprehended by Doral police on charges of forging titles and tax documents for stolen luxury vehicles, leading to significant financial losses.
The investigation into the fraudulent activities began in January, following a raid on a Doral chop shop where authorities discovered several high-end stolen cars, including a Lamborghini Urus, Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, and Mercedes-Benz G550. These vehicles had a combined value exceeding $3.3 million.
Prosecutors allege that Moran, who worked at the Baumgardner Auto Tag Agency, used her position to manipulate vehicle identification numbers (VINs) and create fraudulent titles for wrecked vehicles, presenting them as being in perfect condition. For each fraudulent title, she reportedly received between $800 and $1,000, amounting to approximately $20,000 in illegal earnings from processing documents for at least 18 stolen vehicles.
Moran is facing 36 felony counts, including 18 counts of title fraud and 18 counts of official misconduct. These charges highlight the extent of her involvement in the operation, which also included processing fraudulent titles for private individuals and possibly receiving additional payments from these clients.
The operation’s exposure resulted from the collaborative efforts of the Doral and Miami police departments, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, and the Miami-Dade tax collector’s office. The investigation revealed that Moran’s phone contained photos of driver’s licenses and title documents, further implicating her in the scheme.
Currently held on a $50,000 bond, Moran faces severe legal consequences if convicted, with each count of title fraud and official misconduct carrying potential prison time. The authorities continue to investigate the full scope of the fraud and any additional parties involved.
