YONKERS, NY – For many Americans today, the prospect of owning a new car can be financially daunting considering the fact that prices are climbing and interest rates on vehicle loans are still at historic highs. With that being the case, many are turning to the used car market in order to find a less costly alternative that still offers a reliable and safe means of transportation.
That being said, individuals in the market for a new set of wheels might want to take a look at a recent list published by Consumer Reports, which runs down the most reliable – and least reliable – used cars on the market today.
According to the nonprofit consumer advocacy group, Lexus and Toyota are the two most reliable brands currently on the market out of the 26 automotive brands they ranked, with both company’s vehicles coming out far ahead of even the third-placed Mazda, itself very highly-regarded in terms of reliability by Consumer Reports.
Steven Elek, Senior Automotive Data Analyst at Consumer Reports, laid out the reasons why the two top contenders on their list won out over a crowded field of competitors in the preowned vehicle marketplace.
Brands like Lexus and Toyota have a history of conservative redesigns, incrementally improving their entire product line, rather than introducing many all-new systems,” he said. “Our data consistently shows over time that cars from those brands are reliable when new and they continue to be reliable as they age.”
Rounding out Consumer Reports’ top five used car brands in terms of reliability were the aforementioned Mazda in third place, followed by Acura in fourth and Honda in fifth.
In contrast, those ranking at the bottom of the list – denoting their status in Consumer Reports’ eyes as the least reliable among the current crop of preowned options – were Tesla at 24th, Dodge at 25th, and Chrysler dead last at 26th.
